Rodarte:Hip to be Square

14 October 2009 Carita Ellis-Espola

Screen shot 2009-10-14 at 11.54.26 AMSometimes cutting edge borders right along insane. And if you’re reading this, you must admit how hard it is to resist the dangerously beautiful and twisted. The Mulleavy sisters and their company ‘Rodarte’ make art fashion that is both dangerously beautiful, twisted- and we believe these girls may very well be insane. In short, we are desperate to meet them immediately. We don’t believe that artists, including fashion designers, can quietly create such incendiary art and then go home to have sex missionary style. What we mean is that Kate and Laura have brains we’re aching to pick.

We won’t know if you can tell by looking, but these clothes are high end. In fact, these pieces are so meticulously created that Mrs. Mainstream Consumer can only hope to set eyes on them, let alone buy them. Many of their pieces seem much easier to look at then to use anyway (which is often the case with great art- we get it.). Yes, Rodarte cleaned up during fashion week in NYC, and yes we can only imagine what they’re Screen shot 2009-10-14 at 11.52.44 AMaudaciously charging for one dress. The unintentional audacity alone makes them intriguing. Despite all that, keep in mind that those dwelling amidst the underground and those soaring well above ground share far more parallels than one might think. On one hand are the unimaginable levels of freedom, and the innate necessity to breathe life into a vision. On the other, there are many dealings with those who are too afraid or too conditioned to get where you’re coming from.

If you are unable to absorb nothing else they’ve created, check out the pillow cases which read “Here you will dream of people you admire exposing your fraudulence.” It’s our quote for the month and yes- we want those especially. Call us insane, but these Screen shot 2009-10-14 at 11.51.44 AMchicks are certainly judgeMENTAL. We’re in girls. Give us a call.

Correction: *The pillow cases are being presented by Rodarte at a boutique in Paris called Colette (213 RUE SAINT-HONORÉ 75001 PARIS), though the quotes were created by performance artist and writer Miranda July. Sorry Miranda for temporarily estranging you from your brilliance. –jM
